Naturparks - Schwarzwälder gestalten ihre Heimat

Two large nature parks share nearly the entire area of the Black Forest. One is the Naturpark Schwarzwald Mitte/Nord and is situated in the northern and central Black Forest, and the other, the Naturpark Südschwarzwald, is located in the southern Black Forest.

The central/north nature park is the largest one in Germany with an area of around 375,000 hectares (1,450 square miles). Its boundaries include 106 municipalities and seven rural and two urban districts in which 700,000 people live.

The two nature parks meet at Triberg. The southern nature park which is 370,000 hectares in size (1,430 square miles) begins in Triberg and ends at the Upper Rhine – Oberhein in German- at the border with Switzerland. Sports and recreation have a grand tradition in this holiday region. Together with the Schwarzwaldverein, the two nature reserves have developed a standardised system of signs that point hikers along reliably marked trails to their destination. The Schwarzwaldverein is an association that cares for the needs of the nature in the Black Forest and is predominantly responsible for signposting the hiking trails in the Black Forest.

Two nature protection centres provide information with exhibitions, guided tours, workshops, presentations and courses about the nature and character of the Black Forest. A third centre is located on the Rhine River island of Rappenwört near Karlsruhe. It was founded in December 1996 as a foundation sponsored by the federal state of Baden-Württemberg and the city of Karlsruhe.

The nature protection centre at the Ruhestein Pass at the Schwarzwaldhochstraße, a high altitude panorama road, provides information about the special features of the landscape. On guided tours you can learn how the Black Forest emerged, which animals live where and how they live. The Haus der Natur – the house of nature - at the base of the Feldberg Mountain impressively demonstrates the variety of landscapes and the rich cultural heritage that characterise the southern Black Forest.
